SAAOG Abstract Spotlight - Dovid Rosen, Fourth-year Medical Student

What is your current role?
I am currently a fourth-year medical student at Wayne State University, in Detroit. I applied for an OBGYN residency, and excitedly await graduation in May, of 2025!

Tell me about your accepted abstract and why you were so passionate about that topic?
My abstract focuses on the shifting demographics of OBGYN trainees and practitioners, as it has changed over the last few decades. When I started this project, I was one of the few males in my year applying to OBGYN. As I look at residencies to interview, the discrepancy is even stronger, with maybe one male resident per cohort. This project became that much more important to me, as not only have the number of males going into OBGYN declined immensely, but so has the numbers of females of multiple other races, and diversity is important to providing excellent care to patients of all different backgrounds.

How did you become interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology?
When I began medical school, even as my third year began, I did not consider OBGYN. I was between Hematology/Oncology and Neurology. Then, I saw a baby be delivered, and as the joy of its little cries filled the room, I knew this was the field for me. It is a privilege to be able to assist mothers as they bring new life into this world, and to help women with their potentially complex medical needs. I finished the rotation needing to do more, to deliver more babies, and as they say, the rest is history. I have a particular affinity for Gyn Oncology, as this is closer to me original interests, and hope to specialize after residency!

How did you become involved with the SAAOG?
I was looking to present this abstract, to a notable organization, and saw SAAOG was accepting submissions.

What would you like to see occur in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology during your career?
In the tone of this abstract, I hope to see the field welcome all applicants, both male and female, and of all races, so that patients will have greater chance to choose a provider that they are comfortable with. In a greater sense, decreased intrapartum mortality rates are too high in this country, and I hope to see a change where we lead in the rankings.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
Outside of the office, I enjoy watching both football and baseball, being a New York Giants and Yankees fan. I also love to cook, hosting dinner parties when time allows.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I am the youngest of seven siblings, with 2 brothers and four sisters. I have twenty-two nieces and nephews, with more on the way.
