SAAOG Membership Spotlight: Michelle Larzelere, MD

What is your current role?

I am currently a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida. I am also the associate program director for our residency program.

What is the best part of your occupation?

As a generalist, I enjoy the variety of work I perform. In one week, I can see patients in clinic, deliver babies, and perform hysterectomies. Each day is unique, and I am never bored. As an educator, I find considerable pride in knowing that I will have an impact beyond my own patients by influencing the next generation of physicians.

How did you become interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology?

My interest in obstetrics and gynecology began during my third year of medical school. I was interested in surgery but wanted to maintain a long-term relationship with my patients. Then, I saw my first delivery, and I never looked back. To be able to help a woman and her family through the greatest joys, and sometimes sorrows, of life is an honor that few are granted.

How did you become involved with the SAAOG?

I became involved with the SAAOG based on the advice and mentorship of two of my former attendings. As a resident, I was encouraged to submit my resident research project as a poster presentation. When I joined the faculty, I was recommended for membership. Given the positive experience I had going to the meeting as a resident, I wanted to be able to encourage my residents to submit their scholarly activity as well.

Explain how you benefit from being a member of SAAOG.

One of the main benefits I have seen from being involved with SAAOG is the opportunity to present scholarly work. Each resident is required to participate in a research project. SAAOG gives them an outlet to share that work with their colleagues. Additionally, at meetings, I can meet other obstetrician gynecologists working within the same region. This allows me to get to know physicians working nearby who I may not have otherwise met.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?

My favorite things to do outside of the office are spending time with my family and traveling. I have a 1.5-year-old daughter and watching her explore the world gives me immense joy.
