SAAOG Abstract Spotlight - Kyle Distler, PGY1, Internal Medicine Resident

What is your current role?
PGY1 Internal Medicine Resident at HCA Orange Park FL

Tell me about your accepted abstract and why you were so passionate about that topic?
I have long been passionate about women’s health and the lack of research focused in this area that I’ve noticed for far too long. I’m big on preventative health and have taken a lot of time to understand hormone replacement for thos struggling with menopause. Moreover, my grandmother died of bone cancer thought to be due to metastatic breast cancer, and my mother, her daughter, struggled greatly with menopause symptoms. However, the damage done by the WHI study long ago has made her very hesitant to treatment.

How did you become interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology?
It has such an amazing opportunity to intervene and help women and educate to better patients’ lives. I’m currently an Internal Medicine resident looking to continue to do research in HRT, osteoporosis prevention, and menopause management.

How did you become involved with the SAAOG?
I was recommended by a mentor to submit to the SAAOG to present at the Annual Meeting. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn and diversify my skillset.

What would you like to see occur in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology during your career?
I will answer this for IM. I hope to educate fellow physicians about the benefits to HRT and who to consider for this treatment and how to recognize these patients to direct them to the appropriate experts.

What are your hobbies outside of the office?
I love to play sports, spend time with my family and friends, and watch my Gators play. I also love being involved in research and community events.

What is something surprising that most people do not know about you?
I really find a lot of value in understanding conditions specifically affecting female health, and I hope to create comfort among providers of different specialties to better understand and recognize these factors.
